What Everybody Ought to Know About Sweatshirts...(For Your Next Party)

Embroidered sweatshirts are an essential item when the weather turns cold. Our corporate customers love the idea that 6,100 potential customers see their logo neatly embroidered on a sweatshirt. Have you ever wondered how the sweatshirt was invented? You probably don't care, but here it is anyway:

crewneck sweatshirt

Crewneck

The first crewneck sweatshirt was invented in 1920 by Benjamin Russel Jr a football player at the University of Alabama. He was tired of the itchy and hot, uncomfortable wool jerseys. He brought the idea of replacing the wool fabric with stretchy fabric to his father, and the Russell Athletic Company was born.

Adding Zippers

A natural evolution of the crewneck sweatshirt was the addition of zippers. A short length of zipper near the neckline allows the wearer to remove it quickly. This type of garment is known as a 1/4 zip. As the sweatshirt evolved a wide range of quarter and full zip sweatshirt styles became popular.

The Hoody Is Born

A milestone in the evolution of the sweatshirt came in 1930 when the Knickerbocker Knitting Company, later renamed Champion Products, added a hood to their crewneck sweatshirts. The hood was added to protect outdoor workers and athletes from cold weather, and the hoody was born. Champion produced a sweatshirt with a hood and special double thickness material.
